How to Perform a One-Step Machine Polish

Technicians already solid on washing and decontamination who’ve practiced machine control on suitable panels. Thin, failing, matte, wrapped, or unknown finishes call for different decisions entirely.

A one-step correction commonly takes most of a working day once prep and QC are counted. Large or complex vehicles take longer.

Confirm the approved scope, repaint and repair history, paint type and condition, edges, high spots, chips, oxidation, depth readings where they mean something, and what the customer expects.

Steps

Do the work in order.

  1. Step 1

    Inspect and map the finish

    On clean paint, work several light angles and mark the defect types, sensitive edges, repaints, low readings, failing clear, trim, film, and the areas you’ll stay away from.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare and mask

    Wash and decontaminate, dry the seams, remove any residue, protect trim and fragile edges, stage clean pads, and get dust and cords under control.

  3. Step 3

    Build the least-aggressive test

    Start mild: a gentle compatible pad and liquid, the manufacturer’s technique, a representative section, and a consistent working area and pass count.

  4. Step 4

    Inspect the true result

    Remove the residue with the approved method, change your light angle, and check for haze, filling, temperature, and remaining defects. Then adjust one variable at a time — only one.

  5. Step 5

    Polish panel by panel

    Keep your arm speed controlled, your passes overlapped, the pad flat where required, your eyes on the edges, your sections modest, and your pads cleaned or replaced on time.

  6. Step 6

    Manage heat and contamination

    Check panel and pad temperature by an appropriate method and stop when things run hot. Keep pads clean, and keep polish dust and residue out of the gaps.

  7. Step 7

    Final prep, inspect, and protect

    Remove the residue, inspect every angle and edge, correct only the misses that are safe to correct, apply the approved protection, and record exceptions and aftercare.

A one-step polish is a balancing act: defect improvement and final finish in a single machine stage. The test spot is where you earn the job — it selects the least aggressive pad, liquid, speed, pressure, passes, and section size that meet the agreed result without excess heat or removal.

Frequently asked questions
How much paint does a one-step remove?

There’s no universal amount. Paint system, defects, pad, liquid, machine, technique, and readings all vary — use the least aggressive process the test proves.

Can one-step remove deep scratches?

It may soften some, but deep or through-clear defects are not to be chased. Let the test spot set expectations.

Is a rotary polisher required?

No. Plenty of one-step work runs on a dual-action machine. Use only equipment and technique the technician is trained on and the test proves suitable.
